Former Hedley star sentenced to 5 years in prison

The former frontman of Hedley has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for sexual assault.

Canadian musician Jacob Hoggard was found guilty in June of sexually assaulting an Ottawa woman in 2016.

The sentence was handed down Thursday morning by Ontario Superior Court Justice Gillian Roberts.

The Crown had been seeking six to seven years of prison time stating Hoggard posed a danger to the public and needed to be behind bars.

The defence was asking for a more lenient sentence of three to four years arguing the singer was assessed to be at a low risk to re-offend and had a good chance of rehabilitation.

Roberts also ordered the 38-year-old to be placed on the sex offender registry for the next 20 years.

Hoggard intends to appeal the decision.
