Poultry Imports Banned From Certain US States

Think again if you’ve thought about getting a turkey and fixings from across the border to save cash.

A high influx of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is going around, so the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has banned poultry imports from specific states, including;

  • Maine
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • North Dakota
  • Idaho
  • Washington

The CFIA states “raw poultry will only be allowed entry into Canada with documentation, such as a receipt, stating it was purchased in a state not currently affected by HPAI outbreaks. Those without proper documentation will have to surrender their poultry to Canada Border Services Officers for disposal or return the item to the grocery store.”

Items NOT allowed into Canada:

  • Raw poultry meat (including frozen turkeys and chickens)
  • Raw table eggs
  • Egg yolks and egg white (albumen)
  • Cooked leftovers from a restaurant
  • Raw pet food and raw poultry items for pet food
  • Feathers

The only way to bring in the cooked food from the affected states is if the meat is cooked or otherwise states Ready to Eat, Cooked, Fully Cooked, etc.
