Remote learning is not getting much support from its direct users.
The Rainy River District School Board’s student senate discussed the issue during a meeting last June.
Student trustee Charles Watts says the informal survey found few favouring the practice used during the pandemic.
“The majority of students indicated that remote learning, which occurred when in-person learning pivoted to Google Classroom, was not well received. Students found in-person learning to be more effective with students having the ability to interact with others and support their learning,” says Watts.
Watts says students also felt remote learning was not engaging and it took a toll on students’ mental health.
“Once students indicated their remote learning lacked the same structure as in-person learning, with learning from home posing challenges with respect to connectivity and home life distractions,” adds Watts.
Some did like the flexibility taking e-learning courses provided but noted contacting the teacher was challenging.
The board says just six students had requested to continue their studies remotely this year.
