Area Fastball Teams Return to NAFA

Three teams representing the Rainy River District Fastball League are taking part in the North American Fastpitch Association’s World Series.

This year’s tournament is in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The Sight and Sound Wolves and the Northern Extreme, a mix of players from the league, are competing in the A division.

A second Northern Extreme team is playing in the under 23 division.

Spokesperson Shelby Nosan says local sponsors helped get them there.

“We had some huge donations from three different sponsors, La Place Rendezvous, Barwick service and George Olsher, the legend himself, and another legend of the league, Mr. (Brent) Tookenay, provided sponsorship through Seven Generations Education Institute,” says Nosan.

The Extreme opened play in the A Division on Thursday with an 8-2 loss to the Optimum Crush from Wisconsin.
The Wolves won their first game, 9-1 over the Cushing Tigers, another club from Wisconsin.

The U23 team is on the field for the first time today, taking on a squad called the Midwest Free Agents, players from various cities coming together as one.

Nosan says the tournament is one of the hardest to win.

“We’ve had some really competitive teams go down there and do pretty well. Some of them have placed in the top five, but yeah, it is a tough tournament. You do have to play a lot of games, so you have to have some deep lineups and some strong pitchers that you can hopefully rely on.”

The competition wraps up Sunday.
