Nature Conservancy Hosts Backyard Bio-Blitz

If you are outside this long weekend, you might want to take a photo of things you see in the great outdoors.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is holding it’s third annual Backyard Bio-Blitz.

Liv Monck-Whipp is the coordinator for conservation biology and says any type of plant or animal observation can be useful.

“Even dandelions are good to document, especially with climate change and invasive species,” explains Monck-Whipp.

“There are things are things that influence the species that we see, even in our backyard and it’s important to document that bio-diversity as well.”

Monck-Whipp adds they will be collecting wildlife observations from across the country.

“We’re asking people across Canada to go out and document bio-diversity near and around them through (the app) i-naturalist, because this contributes to a bigger understanding of biodiversity across the country.”

Last year over 6,500 people took part and over 36,000 observations were collected.

You can take part by registering on the Nature Conservancy website and take photos and post them online through the i-naturalist app.
