School Board Concerned With Private Secondary School at SCAP

The Rainy River District School Board is ending a long-standing partnership agreement with the Christian Parents’ Association Board.

That agreement provided educational programming to CPA and the Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program (SCAP).

Chair Raymond Roy says the CPA violated that agreement when it began operating private secondary education within SCAP.

“In August, the CPA chose to start a private secondary school, which caused us concern grave concerns about the viability of the whole Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program,” says Roy.

The Board says it saw a sudden and dramatic decline in SCAP’s secondary student enrolment that impacted the funding provided to SCAP and the area school system as a whole.

“We did notify them that they’re in violation of the agreement. We asked him to stop being in violation of the agreement, but they chose to continue on with the private secondary school,” says Roy.

The Board has approved the agreement for another year last May.

Roy says the relationship with the CPA had been very good since for four decades leading up to the decision.

The school board says programming support for SCAP will continue until the end of this school year.

Roy says the approximately 60 students now attending the elementary grades of SCAP will be welcomed into the board’s other schools for this September.
