Another Population Decline For District

A further decline in the number of people who live in the Rainy River District.

Figures from the 2021 Census show a 3.3 per cent drop since 2016, a loss of about 700 people.

LaVallee and Dawson townships show double-digit decreases.

Emo lost almost 10 per cent of its population while Fort Frances falls 3.3 per cent.

Atikokan drops 1.8 per cent.

Some areas saw gains.

Lake of the Woods township has seen its population increase 34 per cent.

Chapple township increased by 18.7 per cent.

More people, 3.1 per cent, are also living in the unorganized parts of the district.

Meantime, Canada’s population is inching toward 37 million, a 5.2 per cent increase since 2016

Here are the population figures for all municipalities in the Rainy River District.
