The number of active high-risk cases in the region continues to drop.
The Northwestern Health Unit reports 161 cases on Monday, down from 288 on Friday.
The 7-day per cent positivity rate did go up slightly to 21.8 per cent.
There are three active institutional outbreaks.
Meantime, a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine provides better protection than two doses.
That’s the opinion of our Medical Officer of Health.
Dr. Kit Young Hoon says she’s not opposed to the concept of having three doses meaning you are fully vaccinated.
“The concept of switching the definition of fully vaccinated to three doses is a reasonable policy decision, based on the fact there is a significant benefit from getting that third dose,” explains Dr. Young Hoon.
Dr. Kit Young Hoon admits the Health Unit doesn’t have a lot of say in the matter.
“The concept of being fully vaccinated, of course, refers to things like mandates and legal requirements. So at this point, that’s primarily a provincial decision. But I think the concept of switching fully vaccinated to include a third dose is a reasonable one.”
Right now, 54.1% of eligible residents in the health unit’s catchment area have had their third dose.
In northern Minnesota, there are four new cases of COVID-19 in Koochiching County and four in Lake of the Woods County.
