Local Projects Secure Northern Ontario Heritage Funding

A windfall from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

The town of Fort Frances is receiving more than 2.7 million for various projects.

Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry Minister, Greg Rickford, in Fort Frances Monday for several funding announcements.

Over $1.7 million will go toward the planned expansion of the Memorial Sports Centre which will include a new pool.

Another $466,125 will be used on the expansion of the Sister Kennedy Centre.

The town will use another $376,995 on upgrades to the docks at the Sorting Gap Marina and $148,500 for improvements to the Fort Frances Airport.

“The Town of Fort Frances is very fortunate to have the support of the Ontario government and this announcement by our MPP and Minister Greg Rickford today, to address a number of projects and the general needs at our facilities in our town,” says Travis Rob, Manager of Operations and Facilities, Town of Fort Frances. “These funds will help us in better meeting the needs of our community in maintenance, accessibility, space management, and all aspects of public safety.”

Funding for Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls as well.

The municipality is receiving $360 thousand from NOHFC for two projects.

Half of the money will go toward the renovation of the Nestor Falls Community Centre.

The other $180 thousand will be put towards the first phase of a bike trail development plan at Bass Lake Park.

“The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls is grateful for the funding support of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation for these two projects. We are pleased that our residents will be able to enjoy the enhancements to the community hall and that the
space, which is vital to community gatherings, will be able to better meet their needs,” says Mayor Norbert Dufresne.

“We are also very excited that this funding will enable us to start construction on the highly anticipated Bike Trail network in Nestor Falls. These trails will be a great amenity for local residents, and will be a year-round attraction for visitors to our community.”

“Today’s investment will expand recreational opportunities for residents to keep active and healthy and will help support and sustain our northern tourism industry,” says Rickford. “Supporting local communities helps create jobs and keeps the North competitive.”

The Minister is scheduled to make another announcement this morning at St. Mary School in Fort Frances.
