Thunder Bay-Rainy River Riding Profile

The Thunder Bay-Rainy River may be one of the longest in Canada.

It stretches from the town of Rainy River to the south side of Thunder Bay, with the Harbour Expressway serving as the dividing line. It’s a nearly five-hour drive from one end to the other.

It was formed when the riding’s boundaries were redrawn in 2003, expanding the former Thunder Bay-Atikokan riding to include the rest of the Rainy River District, which was then part of the former Kenora-Rainy River Riding.

Voters in the riding have voted Liberal and NDP candidates over the years.

You have to go back to 1921 to find the last time voters elected a Conservative MP. That was when the riding was known as Fort William-Rainy River.

There are approximately 65,000 eligible voters in this election.

That is about three thousand more than in the 2019 election.

Some of the key issues that emerged during the campaign included border issues, tourism, jobs, water quality in Indigenous communities and the overdose epidemic in small communities.
