Lakers Need Billets

The Fort Frances Lakers are still looking for host families to serve as billets to out-of-town players.

There are now twelve players staying with nine different families.

Billet coordinator Sarah Freeman-Kivimaki says they will likely need another five homes very soon.

Players stay at your home while they are members of the Lakers.

Freeman-Kivimaki says it’s the players’ home away from home.

“There is a $500 fee that the players pay directly to the billet homes. It helps with groceries and any extra expenses,” says Freeman-Kivimaki.

Players also adhere to a curfew when staying with a host family.

Freeman-Kivimaki says anyone wanting to help out can call her at 275-6991.

“It’s as simple as getting ahold of me and saying, hey, I have some extra space, and I would love to have a player stay with me. Then after a vulnerable (persons) and a criminal check from the OPP, you’re good to go.”

Freeman-Kivimaki says there is some urgency to the call out for more billets.

She says they only have space for one more player.

If more homeowners than needed express interest, Freeman-Kivimaki says they will be on a list to call if additional out-of-town players are recruited by the Lakers and need a place to stay.
