The Number Of Active Fires Decreasing

Rain is helping in the fight against forest fires in northwestern Ontario.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports 114 active fires, but only fourteen are considered not under control.

There were six new starts reported yesterday.

Three were in the Rainy River district.

One was on an island on Rainy Lake. That blaze has since been declared out.

Other small fires near Entwine Lake, approximately 77 kilometres northeast of Fort Frances and near Light Lake, about 30 kilometres northeast of Atikokan, remain active.

The biggest blaze is still Kenora Fire 51, which is now burning at over 200-thousand hectares.

The forest fire hazard is currently moderate for much of the area west of Quetico Park, high to the east.
