The Ontario government is reiterating its desire to keep the COVID-19 vaccine voluntary.
Unlike other vaccines that are mandatory for school children, the COVID vaccine won’t be one of them.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says they are respecting one’s freedom of choice.
“At the same time, we can be strong advocates for vaccines as a safe way to reduce risk and to allow for a more normal return to class,” says Lecce.
Lecce is also resisting calls that teachers be fully vaccinated.
He insists schools will be safe for students to return.
The education minister notes the province has provided $600-million to improve the ventilation systems of schools.
“Our commitment and our goal is to get kids back, keep them safe and yes, with the intention of keeping our schools open, which we know is really the best way by which we can support children from an academic perspective, from a mental health perspective,” says Lecce.
The province released its back-to-school strategy earlier this week.
