More Indigenous history and teachings are coming to the elementary school curriculum.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says his ministry has been meeting with and listening to Indigenous leaders.
“Right now, in our education system, there is mandatory learning in grades four to eight, and we’re looking for ways we can further build on and strengthen that knowledge from grades one to three,” explains Lecce explains.
The minister wants to take the time necessary to listen to leaders and organizations.
“There’s a list of 12 organizations, including the Chiefs of Ontario, for example, who we have been discussing with and meeting with over the past months and years, and we look forward to that discussion as we meet into July,” added Lecce.
It’s not certain if this update to the curriculum will be ready for September.
