Forest Fire Activity Increasing

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says it is now keeping tabs on 48 active forest fires across northwestern Ontario.

Twenty are not under control, including the fire near Naitcatchewenin.

Twenty-one fire crews are involved in that fire which is being held at 407 hectares.

Travel is also restricted in certain areas in and around the fire.

All travel, use and access are prohibited unless authorized by a travel permit issued by the Fort Frances District Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Eighty-six residents from the community were evacuated to Fort Frances because of poor air quality issues caused by smoke.

Most have since returned back.

There were eleven new fires reported by late yesterday afternoon.

None of them were in the Rainy River district, where seven fires are active.

Most are small fires located at the south end of Quetico Provincial Park that the Ministry is monitoring.
