More streetcars will be constructed in Thunder Bay.
Officials unveiled Wednesday that the Alstom Plant will be building 60 electric streetcars for the Toronto Transit System, backed by a federal investment of $568 million.
Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna praised the project and the benefits it will bring to various municipalities across Ontario, including Thunder Bay.
“Supporting the TTC’S purchase of sixty new electric streetcars for Toronto, built in Thunder Bay, is a win-win-win.”
Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Marcus Powlowski recognized the significance of the announcement to local jobs.
“This is a great day for Thunder Bay. Mostly I want to congratulate the workers at the Alstom plant and Unifor Dominic Pasqualino, who is the president of the local union, this is certainly a great day for them. I’d also want to congratulate Alstom and the management her in Thunder Bay for their great work in putting this together.”
Mayor Bill Mauro was excited about the project, and believes the city can offer even more in the future.
“We really hope this is not the last announcement. We really do believe here in Thunder Bay that we are the answer to the mass-transit problems and challenges in Ontario.”
Deliveries of the streetcars will begin being delivered in 2023.
