Demolition Continues

The town of Fort Frances is keeping a watchful eye on the demolition of the former Resolute Forest Products mill.

The work crew has now started the third phase of work, which focuses mostly on the Kraft Mill.

As that happens, questions continue to swirl around the material from other buildings already taken down.

Mayor June Caul is hoping the company doing the work and the property owner take care of it.

“I’m hoping that most of the rubble that needs to go to the dump will go to the dump their dump as soon as they possibly can and not just have it laying there until 2022 when they’re all done,” says Caul.

The town’s Chief Building Official Cody Vangel says the property owner is still working on removal plans.

“I know they are obviously watching market conditions to see you when would be the most opportune time, but they do have some logistics to iron out, (including) where the material will be shipped to,” says Vangel.

The town’s Chief Administrative Officer Doug Brown says it has been sorted on-site for easy removal.

“When the equipment comes in, it’s like a Packer, a recycling packer. They’re going to button all this up. The less air that they have it in, the more dense the material. So that’s what they’re going to do with all the scrap steel in the different types of steels,” says Brown.

There is no firm timetable for when the material will begin to be moved off-site.
