As the holiday season starts to set in, the Northwestern Health Unit is out with a new set of travel recommendations.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says for travel within Ontario, they’re using the provincial COVID-19 framework as the guide.
“Avoid all non-essential travel to areas that have higher levels of COVID-19,” says Doctor Young Hoon. “People in higher transmission areas should avoid travel to lower transmission areas except for essential reasons.”
If you have family or friends coming home for the holidays, Dr. Young Hoon says you need to make sure everything is done to keep the community safe.
“Those returning to our area from very high-risk areas should drastically reduce close contact with others for 10 to 14 days after arriving home. This will help lower the risk of exposure to COVID-19.”
There are some exceptions to the recommendations.
“Manitoba border communities who use Kenora as their main service hub and do not travel west of Falcon Lake are exempt from these recommendations.”
Young Hoon adds anyone who travels and develops symptoms of COVID-19 should self–isolate and get tested.
The Northwestern Health Unit is currently a yellow zone (protect). The Thunder Bay region is an orange zone (restrict).
