Road Naming/Renaming Policy To Be Developed

The town of Fort Frances is developing a new policy around the naming and renaming of roads.

Town council gave administration to proceed at their meeting Monday.

It comes as council ponders a request from Councillor Doug Judson to change the name of Colonization Road.

Councillor Mike Behan sees it as a good first step, but just not now.

“I believe there are far more pressing concerns facing our community that demand the immediate and undivided attention of council and administration at this time when we are watching our mill being demolished, and while we’re in the midst of a global pandemic,” says Behan.

Behan was the only councillor to object to moving ahead with the policy and a mailout to residents to explain the history behind colonization.

Behan thought council was going to take its time.

“I was under the impression that a majority of council directed that the naming/renaming of roads in town be pushed back by referring it to committee with no timeframe attached. Yet, here we are three weeks later discussing the issue again at our very next meeting.”

The mailout is expected to go out in tax bills in February.
