Salvation Army Takes Steps To Protect Volunteers

The Salvation Army in Fort Frances is not letting COVID-19 stop it from the necessity of its Christmas Kettle Campaign.

It kicked off last week.

Auxiliary Captain Arthur Heathcote says they’ve taken steps to ensure the safety of their volunteers and others.

“Everyone on the kettle will be wearing a mask. We also have a bag full of PPE and materials to make sure the kettle is clean and that all of the volunteers can be protected while they’re volunteering with us,” says Heathcote.

No changes are being made to the Christmas hamper program.

Some locations are giving out gift cards instead of food items.

The kettle campaign in Manitoba is shut down because of the outbreak of COVID-19 cases across the province.

Heathcote says they got the okay from the Health Unit to proceed as usual.

“We’re spacing out all of our appointments, which is the only difference this year that’s really happening, just to make sure that all social distancing protocols are being met.”

The Salvation Army is still welcoming volunteers to help with the campaign.
