Fee Hike Proposed For Dock Slips

The cost to rent a dock slip at the Sorting Gap Marina in Fort Frances could be taking a hefty increase over the next couple of years.

The town’s community services committee is recommending fees increase by almost $90 in 2021 and another $90 in 2022.

Recreation and Culture Manager Aaron Bisson says the increase help offset the cost of some improvements.

“What we’re looking doing is starting to move toward some better docking systems, increasing our surveillance and as well as providing a breakwater,” says Bisson.

The increase would bring current rates to $510 a year in 2021 and $600 in 2022.

Recreation and Culture Manager Aaron Bisson says town prices are still cheaper than elsewhere.

“One of the other places in town is $640 plus HST, and the other one is $675. If you look to the town of Kenora, they are $632 to $825, and their private docks go up to $1,500 per slip,” says Bisson.

“We’re a gated dock system. We have people that check on their boats. The value that you’re getting at our place, even with some of the docks that are in tough shape, and we are working at replacing those, is far more than just renting a spot at another place.”

Bisson had initially proposed the total increase taking place in 2021, but committee members felt it was best to carry it over two years.

Council will have the final say at an upcoming regular meeting of council.
