Grand Council Treaty 3 Not Accepting Senator’s Apology

Too little, too late – that’s the feeling of Grand Council Treaty #3 about Senator Lynn Beyak’s apology.

The northwestern Ontario senator apologized in the senate on Tuesday for her refusal to take down offensive letters about the residential school system posted to her Senate website.

Grand Council Treaty #3 Grand Chief Frances Kavanaugh says Beyak missed many opportunities to demonstrate she was truly sorry for her previous actions.

He adds the apology seems more driven by her possible suspension from the senate.

Kavanaugh says he has not received any correspondence from Beyak on an apology for her actions, and that she has never asked to visit any Treaty #3 communities to listen and learn first hand about the residential school system.

Independent senators want Beyak to be suspended for a second time despite her apology.
