Train Derailment Near Emo

It could be slow-going in the Emo area this morning.

A train derailment has forced a regional highway to shut down.

Highway 602 just south of Emo has been closed since Wednesday night after a train jumped off the tracks a kilometer and a half south of the junction with Highway 11.

An OPP spokesperson says that some of the cars were carrying crude oil, and as a result, all homes in an 800-metre radius of the incident have been evacuated since just before midnight.

There is no word yet if there were any injuries or when the road will be reopened.

As a result of the derailment, buses to the Donald Young School have been cancelled, as have all classes for today, according to the Rainy River District School Board.

First responders are still on the scene.
