Plastic Bag Ban By-Law Passed

Fort Frances town council has formally approved the by-law that bans plastic shopping bags in the community.

It will take effect next year although no fines will be issued against businesses violating the ban for at least a year.

It also prohibits food containers and beverage cups containing foam material.

There are several exceptions. It doesn’t apply to bags used for bulk food items such as fruit and vegetables, those used to protect clothing after being dry-cleaned or those used to wrap flowers.

Fort Frances is the only Ontario community with such a by-law.

Sioux Lookout and Geraldton passed plastic bag bans several ago but have since lifted them.
