MPP Sees Agriculture As Growth Area

The MPP for Kenora-Rainy River says he’s committed to helping grow the economy in the Rainy River district.

While it won’t come from someone reopening the former mill in Fort Frances, Greg Rickford says everyone did put in their best effort with that.

“We’re all disappointed but this is something that happened 6 years ago. It could have been handled better then but nobody, from the mayor to the council to the (Rainy River District Future Development Corporation) and myself and my office should be disappointed in the amount of work that we’ve put into this,” says Rickford.

Rickford says there are opportunities elsewhere, starting with agriculture.

“We see agriculture expansion here in Fort Frances and Rainy River as one of the largest growth opportunities for agriculture in the entire province.”

Rickford says he spoke with the Agriculture Minister before Christmas about one such opportunity.

“About the potential expansion of egg production here so that was so that when we eat our pickerel we can enjoy it with homemade eggs instead of from Manitoba.”

Rickford says the provincial can also provide some assistance in creating more arable land for crops.
