More Strike Action Planned This Week

The leader of the NDP sees no quick end to the dispute between teachers’ unions and the province unless the government backs down from its position.

Andrea Horwath says it’s about protecting the quality of Ontario’s education system.

“That’s why a lot of parents and other family members that are involved in this push back, they’re working with educators, with the education workers to say we don’t want to ballooning class sizes for our children, we don’t want 10,000 teachers fired,” says Horwath.

Horwath says the government needs to get serious about negotiations at the bargaining table.

“We are urging the government, and we have been all along, to get back to the table and get the cuts off the table. Take away the threat to fire 10,000 teachers and then do some real negotiating.”

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation is planning to resume what’s become rotating one-day strikes Wednesday.

No high schools in the Rainy River district are to be impacted.

Public elementary teachers have been involved in a work to rule campaign for several weeks.

Catholic teachers are also in a legal strike position but have not indicated what action they plan to take.
