A new mining project proposed for northeastern Minnesota is now in the hands of the state’s Natural Resources department.
Twin Metals Minnesota is proposing an underground copper mining operation, processing facility and dry stack tailings facility.
It would be located near Ely.
Environmental groups and others are concerned about the impact of the nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the waters that eventually drain into the Rainy Lake watershed.
DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen says the department is committed to a “rigorous, transparent and neutral review” based on science and state law.
