A proposal by-law to ban plastic shopping bags in Fort Frances won’t come back to town council for final approval this year.
Councillor Doug Judson has put forward the idea.
It was up for discussion this past week at the committee level.
Judson was hoping to have the by-law back to council for its meeting next week.
But at the Planning and Development meeting on Monday, by-law enforcement officer Patrick Briere expressed the need for more time for administration to review the proposal.
“I’m not opposed to something like this, but I just like the opportunity to sit down and review it and make sure that we are hitting all of our targets and sit down with Councillor Judson and go through his mindset in going into it,” says Briere.
Operations and Facilities Manager Travis Rob expressed similar sentiments.
“For sure there are some pros in terms of cleanliness at the landfill site and things like that would definitely be improved. But there’s also some cons to it as well. So before I’d be ready to bring anything for through O & F I want to have some time to really digest what’s coming here,” says Rob.
It’s now expected the committee will take another look at their meetings in January.
If passed at the council level, the ban on plastic bags would not take effect until 2021.
