A site has been selected for a warming centre to be operated by the Fort Frances Homelessness Committee and the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board.
They’ve secured a lease to operate out of the basement of the Apostolic Way Church.
The same area had been identified as a site for a homeless shelter last winter but that had to be shelved for a variety of reasons.
The DSSAB’s Sandra Weir says the goal is to open by mid-December, eventually operating seven nights a week.
“However, right now we’re only going to be able to do about 3 to 4 days a week due to we don’t have the numbers of staff yet and or volunteers. But we want to keep moving forward,” says Weir.
Weir says they’re now seeking volunteers interested in helping out
“Having first aid, CPR or crisis prevention training, all of those are an asset. We will provide that training if individuals don’t have that,” says Weir.
An exact date for opening has yet to be determined.
Weir says there are still some things to get the centre ready for use later this month.
