Victim Of Bear Attack Identified

OPP say the 62-year-old woman who died after an encounter with a bear on a remote island on Rainy Lake is from Minnesota.

Catherine Sweatt-Mueller of Maple Plain, Minnesota passed away on Red Pine Island on Sunday.

She had gone to check on her dogs but didn’t return.

When OPP officers arrived, they found the body Sweatt-Mueller near a bear. Two other bears were also spotted

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is currently determining the next steps in the investigation and will seek OPP assistance if required.

The bear that was near the woman’s body was killed by police.
