Woman Killed In Apparent Bear Attack

A woman is dead from what is believed to be an apparent bear attack.

It happened Sunday night at around 6:30 p.m. on Red Pine Island, located on Rainy Lake near the Ontario/Minnesota border.

OPP Constable Jim Davis says when officers arrived, the body of 62-year-old was located in close vicinity to a bear.

“She was deceased when they located her and there was a bear in close vicinity to her remains that had to be dispatched so officers could carry on their investigation and for their safety and the safety of others on the island,” says Davis.

Two other people were also on the island at the time. Police were told the woman had gone to check on her dogs but did not return.

Two other bears were also spotted on the island and are being dealt with by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.
