First Nations Communities May Soon Be Identified On Provincial Maps

An Ontario city councillor would like to see First Nation communities identified on provincial travel maps.

Cornwall’s Elaine MacDonald says she noticed the absence when she and other members of that city’s council were invited to visit a nearby Indigenous community.

“But I can’t find that or Akwasene or any other reservation in the province shown on provincial ministry of transport maps,” says MacDonald.

Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney was just as surprised and would look to change that.

“Certainly making sure that our mapping within the ministry across Ontario reflects First Nations territories within the province I should be the case,” says Mulroney

Many online maps are also void of First Nation communities in Ontario.
