International Falls Backing Broadband Expansion Plans

The city of International Falls is throwing its support behind an effort to expand broadband services in Koochiching County.

Bemidji-based Paul Bunyan Communications is seeking funding through the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board to bring services to an area between Ray and Kabetogama.

Falls City Councillor Harley Droba says it was one of five areas identified as under-serviced by the Koochiching Technology Initiative.

“And that was one area that they can get funding through IRRRB because it meets more of that space,” says Droba.

Droba says it’s also hoped the company can look to hooking up other areas of the county in the future.

“We’re trying to have that working relationship with Paul Bunyan Communications. If we can help them get into that area we can get him back up in here to be able to go west, east, and south of International Falls.”

City council this week agreed to write a letter of support for the company’s funding application.
