Officials say it’s on schedule and on budget.
Construction of the OPP new detachment in Fort Frances was officially kicked off Monday with a sod-turning ceremony. Work on the site near the town’s water tower started earlier this year.
Solicitor General Sylvia Jones was on hand and says the new building is necessary.
“We are committed as a government to upgrade our facilities to have the policies in place to protect the individuals who have chosen to protect us and our communities,” says Jones.
Jones adds the new building will come with up-to-date technology and advanced security features.
“All of the things that a modern detachment needs, we have incorporated into this site and and that’s done in collaboration with the OPP,” says Jones.
The nearly $20-million facility is expected to be ready for officers next year.
Detachment Commander Inspector Nathan Schmidt says it’s going to give officers a more modern facility to do their job.
“Once this fine team of uniform civilian and volunteer personnel occupy this new detachment, they will have the modern space and resources they need to do an even better job than they are now,” says Schmidt.
Construction of the new building started earlier this year.
