Overnight storm leaves some in the dark

The electricity system in Fort Frances took a bit of a hit Monday night.

A storm brought over 30 millimetres of rain, lightning and strong winds.

The Fort Frances Power Corporation says its distribution system was struck by several lightning strikes.

One would result in an outage originating at its Mowatt Avenue feeder, leaving a number of residents in the dark at around 11 a.m.

Officials say an inspection of the equipment revealed no physical damage, and crews were able to have power back on within a few hours.

Hydro One also reported a few outages elsewhere in the Rainy River District.

About 800 of its customers were impacted.

Those outages were blamed on trees falling on hydro lines.
