OPP focus attention on ‘The Core’

Almost 50 charges have been laid as a result of police enforcement in downtown Fort Frances.

OPP call the initiative ‘The Core’ and was the result of increased complaints to police about public intoxication, trespassing and loitering.

This led to stepped-up foot patrols along Scott Street this summer.

Police say the project’s mission was to reduce crime and victimization while maximizing resource deployments and efficiencies within the 100-400 block area of Scott.

As a result of the 40 foot patrols conducted, 41 charges were laid for alcohol-related offences.

Three others were for drug offences. Four were Criminal Code charges, and one issued under the Highway Traffic Act.

Police also executed five search warrants and issued five warnings.

“Although occurrences for the period show a 61% increase, this is expected due to the increased police presence and the dedication of our members,” states OPP Sergeant Matthew Bartlett in a release.

“The success of the operation is measured by the increased communication between members of the public and the police working together to achieve the overall goal of public safety.”
