Battery collection to become year round in Atikokan

The collection of household batteries is to be made easier in Atikokan.

The township is turning to a national firm to keep them out of its landfill site.

Normally, they are collected during a household hazardous waste day.

Public Works Manager Tyler Dziarmaga says last year, it cost them two thousand dollars to recycle batteries.

“So we managed to find a supplier of services who will basically give us a couple of buckets, and then they’ll come and pick them up for free,” says Dziarmaga.

“We’re hoping to have a couple of spots around town to make it easy for people to really easy to get rid of your batteries.”

Environmental 360 Solutions will also take the batteries for processing at no cost.

The locations for the buckets have not been determined, but Dziarmaga has a few places in mind he will explore.

“The buckets will be around all year. Whenever they get full, they’ll come and pick them up.”

Dziarmaga says the municipalities will receive credits on certain types of batteries, but those are rare, so he doubts the revenue will add up to much more than a couple of hundred dollars annually.
