More Ontario medical school seats opening up

The province is going to open up more medical school spots for students from Ontario.

Premier Doug Ford says the funding was announced last week in the provincial budget.

“We’re investing $33 million to add an additional 100 undergraduate medical school seats and 154 post-graduate medical training seats that prioritizes Ontario residents,” Ford announced at McMaster University Thursday morning.

Ford adds that for too long, Ontario residents haven’t been able to get into Ontario medical schools.

“One of the things I hear all the times from families is that a lot of students are being forces to leave the province for medical school. You hear it, ‘my son or daughter is in Ireland or they are down in the Caribbean in medical school because they can’t find residency spots right here in Ontario’. Meanwhile, students from other countries are learning here, but then they return home after that and I find that unacceptable.”

With the announcement, 60 per cent of the new postgraduate training seats will be in primary care and 40 per cent will be in specialty care.
