Local Sports For Friday, February 24th

The St. Thomas Aquinas girls hockey team drew first blood in their semifinal against the Fort Frances Muskies.

The Saints skated away with a 2-1 overtime victory in Fort Frances Thursday night.

Isabella Reynard and Sophie Muise were the TA goal scorers.

Game two will be Saturday night at the Kenora Rec. Center at 7:30.

The Dryden Eagles girls hockey team has a 1-0 lead in their series with the Sioux North Warriors following a 3-1 victory last night.

Meagan Lundmark opened the scoring 6 minutes into the game and the second period.
Riah Compardo banged in a rebound early in the third to add the the lead.
The lead became three goals when Lundmark found the back of the cage before the Warrior beat Eagle goalie Sydney Boyko on the power-play.
Game 2 is set to go in Sioux Lookout Saturday night at 7:30pm with the series winner to face the winner of the T.A./ Fort Frances series.
In boys hockey, the Muskies scored a 9-1 win over the Dryden Eagles Thursday night in Fort Frances to take the opener of that semi-final series.
Callum McCormick led the way for the home side with three goals.
Ashton Veldhuisen, Klyde Leplante, Teagan Wrolstad, Jackson Tucker, Evan Kabel and Aiden Jean added the other markers.
Game two will be played in Dryden on Saturday night with the puck dropping at 6:30 p.m.

 

The St. Thomas Aquinas senior boys basketball team is one win away from advancing to the All-Ontario championships.

The Saints won both their games on Thursday at the NWOSSA finals.

First they beat Ecole Secondaire Catholique de la Verendrye from Thunder Bay 66-43.

Sawyer Peters led the offence with 24 points.

In the second game of the day TA got by the host team the Manitouadge Wolverines 66-56.

Cooper Thompson paced the attack with 25 points.

That sets up the final this morning against La Verendrye at 9:00.

The Rainy River Owls are into the final of the NWOSSA “A” championship this morning.

The Owls beat Ecole Secondaire Catholique De La Verendrye in their second game yesterday three sets to one.

That after losing in three straight sets to Marathon.

That puts the Owls in the gold medal game against Marathon this morning at 9:30.

 

Meanwhile, Beaver Brae will play the St. Ignatius Falcons in the NWOSSA “AA” senior boys basketball final.

The Broncos will play their first game in the best-of-three final tonight at 5:00.

Game two will go tomorrow morning at 9:30 and game three, if necessary, will take place at 1:30.

All games will take place in Thunder Bay.

The winner will advance to the OFSAA championships.

The Fort Frances Muskies are taking on the Westgate Tigers for the NWOSSA senior girls volleyball title.

The first game is tonight and games two and three (if necessary) will take place Saturday.
