Unincorporated Area Could Face Massive Tax Hike

A northwestern Ontario ratepayers association is warning residents that live in the unorganized parts of northern Ontario of what it is calling a tax bomb.

The District of Kenora Unincorporated Areas Ratepayers Association says a pending reassessment of property-taxes has the potential of increasing taxes by as much as fifty per cent.

That reassessment is scheduled to take place in 2024.

Ratepayers recently emerged from a decade-long overhaul of the Provincial Land Tax system that increased taxation two to ten times what they were paying.

The association says the pending tax change will also impact anyone with cabin.

It plans to discuss the issue with Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford in the near future.
