Front St. to Stay Closed for Awhile

It could be sometime before the town of Fort Frances is able to reopen Front Street.

The recent drop in water levels has led to the water on some parts of Front to recede.

But Mayor June Caul says the water is still an issue in other areas of the waterfront.

“Water levels have receded enough that parts of Front Street and the walkway have resurfaced and water levels have started to recede from the roadways. However, many areas remain flooded, and town officials have not yet suitably undertaken damage assessments required to open areas back up to pedestrian and vehicular traffic at this time,” says Caul.

Front, between Williams and Butler Avenues, and between Mosher and Armit Avenues are closed as are the walking and bike paths along the waterfront.

The Front St. playground, Front St. fitness equipment, the Sorting Gap Marina, the lookout tower, the Hallett and the riverfront docks are also off-limits.

Point Park and Seven Oaks also remain closed.

“We ask you to please stay out of those areas for your own safety. Closures are in place to ensure the safety of the public. Please respect the barricades and stay away from public areas,” reminds Caul.

Caul says as affected areas are evaluated and deemed safe to reopen, a final decision will come from the town’s emergency control group.
