Snowmobilers Taking Advantage of New Rules

No major incidents to report with snowmobilers being allowed to access most streets in Fort Frances.

The town of Fort Frances updated its snowmobile by-law last March to provide greater access to businesses in the downtown and King’s Highway areas.

The change responded to requests from some businesses owners.

By-law enforcement officer Patrick Briere says it has been mostly positive.

“There has been an increase in snowmobiles in town operating, which is good to see. They are accessing right up to the Safeway area. I’ve seen them accessing Husky, and they’re accessing the Kings Highway food businesses,” says Briere.

Briere says his office has handled a number of calls, many seeking information about the updated by-law.

There have also been a few complaints.

“We have had a couple of complaints with snowmobiles racing in certain areas on certain streets or operating on streets they’re not supposed to be driving on. We have worked with the OPP to mitigate those problems.”

Snowmachines are permitted on most streets, except for King’s Highway, Second and Scott Streets.
