Ontario Adds To Joint Provincial-Federal Assistance Program

More financial assistance for farmers in the Rainy River District suffering from drought conditions this summer.

Another five million dollars from the province will flow through a joint federal-provincial program designed to help farmers cover the costs related to drought conditions.

The federal government also recently approved a request from Ontario to increase interim payments from the AgriStability program to 75 per cent for impacted areas like the district.

Provincial Agriculture Minister Lisa Thompson says she’s also asking that expenses currently excluded be part of the package this year.

The federal government announced $100 million for the program open to affected farmers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

The province announced in July a relief program specific to farmers in the Rainy River and Kenora districts.
