Rickford Pleased With New Duties

He calls it a super-ministry for the north.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford is now the Minister for Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry.

Rickford says in a lot of ways they complement each other.

“On the resource side of it, forestry, resource development, and the northern development piece that I carry as the chairman of the Northern Heritage Fund, I just don’t think the north has been in this good of a position with those key Ministries consolidated,” explains Rickford.

Rickford also likes the logic behind adding his new duties to Northern Development and Mines.

“In fact, I always refer to it as the Ministry of Northern Resources and Forestry. My responsibility is to serve the constituents of this riding. But I think what this shuffle Friday did for us out here and for folks all across the north is effectively consolidate some really important ministries.”

Rickford also sees it increasing the importance of northern Ontario issues.

Rickford is also the Minister of Indigenous Affairs.
