The question was….
“What upbeat 80’s song was linked to terrible event 20 years after its release?”
The answer is…
“Walking on Sunshine from Katrina and the Waves!”
The song was released in 1985. The group is considered to be a one-hit-wonder here in North America.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated much of the U.S. Gulf Coast, and many news headlines and blog postings used the phrase “Katrina and the Waves” in their coverage of the storm.
At the time, the lead singer for the group, Katrina Leskanich, told The New York Times that she hope that the true spirit of “Walking on Sunshine” would prevail and that the song would become an anthem for the Gulf Coast’s recovery.
