Meetings To Explore Ways Of Reducing Phosphorous Levels On Lake of The Woods

Environment Canada is revealing three options to reduce phosphorous levels on Lake of the Woods.

The Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation is holding four webinars over the next couple of weeks to get some feedback.

Todd Sellars is executive director and says there are small, medium and larger targets proposed.

“The options Environment Canada is looking at is a 5 per cent reduction in phosphorus, which is effectively natural flushing of the lake over the next 25 or 30 years. So that’s a do-nothing option,” explains Sellers.

“A 20 per cent reduction, which is very close in alignment to what Minnesota is proposing. That 20 per cent reduction would achieve water quality objectives in just about all parts of the lake. They are also proposing a 30 per cent reduction that would absolutely get water quality objectives all of the time. But that 30 per cent objective might be very difficult to achieve.”

The first online webinars will take place today at noon and 7 p.m.

The second set of webinars are set for April 14 at the same times.
