Some Rainy River District Schools To Remain Closed

Schools in some parts of the Rainy River district will not open to students on Monday as planned.

At the recommendation of the Northwestern Health Unit, both the Rainy River District School Board and the Northwest Catholic District School Board have decided to keep some of their schools shuttered for another two weeks because of the increase in cases of COVID-19 in Fort Frances.

All schools in Fort Frances are impacted as are any schools where most of the staff reside in Fort Frances.

This includes;

· St. Mary School

· Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton

· J.W. Walker Public School

· Robert Moore School

· Donald Young School in Emo

· Fort Frances Intermediate School and High School

· Crossroads Public School in Devlin

· Mine Centre Public School in Mine Centre.

Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program and Seven Generations Secondary School will also remain closed until January 25.

All students in these schools will continue to learn remotely until then.

In-person instruction for students with special education needs who cannot be accommodated through remote learning and who wish to attend in-person instruction may continue.

Schools that will open as planned include Rainy River High School, Riverview School, McCrosson-Tovell School, Sturgeon Creek School, Nestor Falls School, Atikokan High School and North Star Community School.

“We continue to monitor the situation in other communities and will take additional measures as necessary” states Dr. Young-Hoon.
