Legion Park Preferred by Advisory Committee

An advisory committee is recommending a proposed splash park in Fort Frances be constructed at Legion Park.

It’s now asking town council to accept its recommendation.

Operations and Facilities Manager Travis Rob says their decision came after conducting a virtual tour of the town’s parks and green spaces.

“We talked about McIrvine Park. We talked about Lillie Avenue Park, basically going through town to talk about town green spaces and where we could put it, the pros and cons. It really came down to Legion Park and woodyard,” says Rob.

The former Shevlin woodyard has been favoured by some members of council since the splash park proposal was raised by Councillor Doug Judson last fall.

Rob says the uncertainty about when any development would take place at the woodyard swayed the committee to recommend Legion Park.

“This committee is gung-ho to seeing this come to fruition, and they didn’t want to wait for that unknown. They’re chomping at the bit. They want to see this built tomorrow if they could,” says Rob.

The committee is also recommending improvements to Lillie Avenue, which runs alongside Legion Park, and for traffic lights to be installed at Lillie and Kings Highway, allowing pedestrians to cross Kings Highway to the park safely.

The committee’s recommendation is expected to be voted on by council at their meeting on Monday.
