Education Minister Defends School COVID Strategy

Provincial NDP continues to be critical of the government’s response to COVID-19 in schools.

There were 299 new cases of COVID-19 impacting schools reported Monday

NDP critic Sara Singh says the province’s strategy is simply bad.

“I guess at the end of the day, what we’re looking for from this minister is an apology to parents, students, and education workers who are putting their lives at risk in our schools, and for him to actually come up with a plan that’s going to help us address the COVID-19 outbreaks in our schools,” says Singh.

Lecce defends the government’s approach, saying it is working.

“The fact that 99.92% of students do not have an active case of COVID, the fact that 99.79% of students have not had an active case of COVID underscores what we are doing. The layers of prevention we’ve put in place are helping to mitigate the risk. We’ll continue to act to protect students,” says Lecce.

Lecce adds more funding for schools and school boards is on the way.
