iPhone alert leads to arrest of U.S. assault suspect

An attempt to escape into Canada has been thwarted by technology.

A person linked to an assault in the U.S. was taken into custody by Provincial Police over the weekend.

OPP say officers received a crash notification from an iPhone that led them to find an abandoned vehicle in the area of Atwood Worthington Road in the west end of the Rainy River District.

Police later learned the vehicle was linked to a domestic assault in the U.S. where a person was injured and their vehicle taken.

The vehicle was driven across the Rainy River into Canada but got stuck in a snowbank.

Police managed to locate the driver hiding among cows in a nearby field.

To add to the person’s bad luck, they had fallen through the ice and were completely soaked when police found them.
